For some reason (and maybe it's a version issue), Garmin Express opens when I connect the 550 to my Macbook, but doesn't show the 550 or "Add Another Device" like I've seen at all previous times before this whole debacle. Guess it doesn't really matter at this point, but it does seem odd. img file's absence didn't affect anything.

Doing so had no ill effect on the map install or function everything functioned perfectly, after which I downloaded the whole 2019 US map package. Handyman - totally on a lark, I removed the gmapbmap.img file from the 550's memory prior to installing 1 test map segment after I downgraded MapInstall.

everything! If I wasn't so damned old, I'd do a freakin' cartwheel right now!

The "Map Info" button shows the correct map version, the "View Map" is back to normal. Installed the 2019 US maps to the original 16gb SD card I started this exercise with, and plugged it into the 550. I uninstalled MapInstall 4.1.1, then found, downloaded and installed MapInstall 4.0.0. I'll try that next.Īdvnzer - you nailed it.

Right now, the only thing I haven't done is remove MapInstall 4.1.1 and download 4.0.xxxx. The "Map Info" button within "Settings" was grayed out, even though I saw piecemeal map renderings on the screen. It was like the rendering wasn't complete and didn't include ALL the map data that should have been displayed.Ĩ. After bootup, I selected "View Map" and saw that the screen showed larger roadways, but not detailed city and neighborhood streets, etc. During bootup, the "Loading Maps" message showed for about 1 second and then disappeared. Then I loaded the SD card w/2019 maps and turned on the 550. Anyway, I retrieved an older gmapbmap.img file (2013) from an archived backup and installed that into the 550. I have to assume it wasn't there last year either I had the 2018 maps loaded on the SD card at that time, as well. The 550 didn't have the gmapbmap.img file it its memory. The 550 didn't see that SD card or its map files either.Ħ. Then I thought maybe it was somehow a bad SD card, so I used another one (FAT32-formatted) and containing the 2019 maps.ĥ. The 550 is not seeing any maps on the SD card. I removed the Maryland map from the 550's memory and reinserted the SD card with the 2019 maps.Ĥ. The 550 still saw the Maryland map in its memory, but no SD maps.ģ. Inserted the SD card with the 2019 map files into the 550. The "Map Info" button displayed the 2019 file info for Maryland, just like normal. MapInstall 4.1.1 loaded the state of Maryland directly to the 550 with no issues.

After transferring files to device you have to manually rename new img file to \Garmin\gmapsupp.img.Īt the bottom of the page there is sample data for Sicily.1. It works similar to Mapsource but creates file with name, that is not recognized by fenix. When using BaseCamp loading maps is supported by external program MapInstall. Mapsource creates file \Garmin\gmapsupp.img on device. Easiest way to load maps is to use Mapsource, it allows for selecting tiles and transfer to fenix attached to USB.

BaseCamp for Windows and Mac OS is available here: Garmin has provided free programs for managing maps on PC - BaseCamp and Mapsource. Compilation is optimized for size and speed. Maps contain a limited set of features - forests, roads, villages. If I look at the content of the device through my computer, I can see both of the maps. I also tried downloading the Greece's OSM Base map for GPS. After that, I downloaded Greece's map for truck and it didn't show on the device. I have created maps basing on schema developed by GPS Maniak. Hello Firstly, I downloaded Bulgaria's OSM Base map for GPS on my Garmin device and it worked. Small, black and white screen doesn't allow for many details. The presentation of the map is very limited. From fenix 5 series, only fenix 5X supports maps. Watch fenix 3 is a different device and doesn't support maps. The same is true for similar models, like Garmin tactix, quatix i fenix 2. There is possibility to install additional maps with Mapsource or MapInstall. In published specification Garmin declared no support for maps, but watch has basic map and about 20MB free storage. Garmin fenix is an outdoor watch equipped with a GPS receiver.
